Description
This is an 1892 day dress. The original, shown in the photo with the umbrella, was part of an exhibition at The Kyoto Costume Institute in Kyoto, Japan. What you are bidding on is a dress made especially for you in your size plus the hat as shown. The pictures are intended to show you what your dress will look like. A detailed list of instructions for measurement will be sent to you immediately after the auction. Payment must be in full before I will cut the dress. The dress can be made in black/white check or lavender/white check. Sewing time, once your measurements are received, is abut 4 weeks. The original fabric is wool twill but I chose a polyester blend for comfort and easy care. The fabric is washable and the dress is easy to press. The original is extremely plain with no embellishments at all. I have added lace and ribbon to mine. The lace on your dress will be cotton although it may be slightly different than shown. The bodice is tightly fitted and opens down the front with hidden hooks and eyes. It is flatlined and all seams are boned. Boning is plastic and is cased. Casing is herringboned in place for easy removal for washing. The hollows in the upper body at the shoulder are padded to get that wonderful Victorian fit. Pads are removable. It has a stand collar with a small pleated ruff both of the checked fabric. A black satin ribbon runs around the collar to a big puff of black satin ribbon which is what the black at the back of the neck on the original looks to be. (If anyone has actually seen this dress and knows exactly what it is please let me know.) Sleeves are gathered at the apex, big over the upper arm and tight over the lower arm. Cuffs are as shown. The skirt is 4 full circles gathered at the waist. It is also A-lined. It looks best worn with a waist roll which will be supplied. It needs to be worn with multiple petticoats and/or crinoline which will NOT be supplied. The length of the original is shown worn about 1inch above the ankle, (which is why I like it so much). All stitching is machine. Interior seams are either overlocked or zigzagged. You can see the photo of the original in "Clothing that Captured the Imagination of Japan, Evolution of Fashion 1835-1895".If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
