Description
YOU WILL SELDOM FIND ANYTHING THIS AUTHENTIC ON EBAY OR ANYWHERE IN NORTH AMERICAPLEASE CHECK MY FEEDBACK FROM BUYERS.This is a new, 2008, Santa Cruz La Laguna, COMPLETE, GIRLS TRAJE. It is in excellent wearable and or collectible condition. This happened before. Rosa was expecting and hoping for a girl. She made this traje, which is way too big for a baby. The traje would have been part of the Christening. Then it would be put away until the appropriate time in the long count, when the girl was almost 4 she would start wearing it on special occasions. By the time she is 8 it will be raggedy. Anyway, it was a boy, Diego Ruben, after her father and my son. As with the last time when Riccardo was born, I bought the now superfluous, TRAJE. My usual deal with Rose. I pay a base price. If there is a profit we split.Santa Cruz is one of the Municipios of Departmento, Solola', in Guatemala's Western Highlands. It is one of the towns on the North shore of Lake Atitlan. It is a Kakchiquel speaking town. The town is one of the few remaining towns anywhere without access BY MOTOR VEHICLE. There is no diesel smell! The styles of the town are less well known than cities and towns more on the tourist track. This traje is cotton except for the decorative bling warped in Mylar or Rayon thread in the belt. The neck decoration is embroidery thread as is the randa in the corte'. The corte' looks like wool weft in cotton warp though it could be all wool. Rosa bought the cloth for the corte'. She describes it as regular. (Is there anything in Guatemala that is regular?) She put the randa on. Both exposed edges are selvedged. The back decoration is made in acrylic yarn. It is all VERY traditional!Let's do the pictures! 1. How it would look from the back. 2. Close up of huipil. It is 20" from shoulder to hem and 23 " across the shoulder. 3. Close up of the neck front. You can see the tie closure. It is a T on circle design and will fit over a big head. 4. more back details. 5. the corte'. 21" top to bottom. 23" Flat measurement along the randa. 6. The rebozo and traje side by side for size comparison. Rebozo 56" long X 17" wide. note the 7. The macrame' ends on the rabioso. 8. The belt. 80" X 1 1/4". 9. The corte' is a circle of cloth. You can find instructions for how to wear it on the internet. 10. The randa. 11. Rosa at my house waiting for Diego Ruben to be ready for the light. 12. Andres.Mail: I mail free to USA addresses. I use US postal Service for International winners. I will discount the cost to send it to you by the amount it would have cost me to send it to Chicago.Referring to the rebozo; it is made with 4 dibujos. Between the solid color strips the design is made in Jaspe. That means the tread is dyed before it is woven. The little drawings in the cloth were dyed into the tread. The weaver has to keep the drawings lined up so that the color changes in files along the distance of the rebozo. It is seen as vertical stripes in photos 6 & 7. This bears some resemblance to an injerto. It is not an injerto. In an injerto the color changes along the length of the warp. In this piece the figures are lined up and change colors from stripe to stripe though not within the stripe. In photo 7 you can see that the drawings are well lined up and that the piece was carefully woven. The drawings "read" well. It has the feel that Rosa puts on things she weaves.Rosa Hernandes is also a jeweler and watercolorist. She does fabrics well . Everything she does she does well. Very unusual in Guatemala. This traje has all the hallmarks of something made to demonstrate socioeconomic status. Rosa and her husband Andres, are successful people. They have many small businesses. This is a very nice Traje that is exactly correct for its time and place of origin. The thread that goes into this kind of hand made clothing costs more than my starting bid. It is an unimaginable bargain. I know quite a bit about this kind of clothing so feel free to ask questions.
