Description
This nice, red huipil is from Chajul. They are known for their geometric animal designs. It is a heavy cotton base cloth with cotton supplemental weft designs. It appears to be like embroidery but it is not embroidery. My weaving teacher called it "Overlay" weaving. What happens is the weaver takes up only a few threads of the warp and lays in the design. It does not show on the other side, as brocading does, or jacquard. These huipiles wear very well. This is a little small to go over my head so I'm selling it without any changes to it. I did launder it. I have found that most Guatemalan huipiles launder extremely well. This one is a little over 29" wide and about 20" long. The neck is somewhere around 20-21 inches.
