Such shirts are commonly found throughout West Africa and most specifically among the Mende, Dogon, Bamana, Senufo, Hausa, Fulani, Igbo, Yoruba, and so forth. The indigo resist-dyed cotton cloth is made of several strips sewn together. The background on this textile is in blue indigo. Each strip or section contains designs in white set against a deep indigo field. Motifs on this cloth recall traditional graphics well-known across West Africa. They are said to have magical significance and to play symbolic role. Motifs such as circles, semi-moon, stars found their explanation in the cosmogony and other religious believes of these peoples. Geometric and abstract motifs refer to the group’s power. This is an old shirt that shows sign of long use as one may see the discoloration in some places. This textile is unique for its patterns.
